This year was a banner year in terms of quality PC games in particular for first person shooters. BioShock, Gears of War, The Orange Box and Call of Duty 4 are all excellent first person shooters that can aruably be consider the action game of the year. However I've given the top spot to Crysis, the intense sci fi shooter from Crytek that looks and plays terrific.

1. CrysisElectronic Arts

Crysis has some hefty system requirements but this is what PC gaming is all about. The engaging game play, open ended levels along with spectactular graphics make this first person shooter the best game in a year with a lot of great titles. 2. BioShock2K Games

BioShock is a superb game on all levels. The game play and features are fresh and exciting while the game's environments and graphics are a visual delight to the eyes. However it's the compelling storyline that will captivate, pull you in, and leave you wishing for more when it's all over.

Just Around the Corner Narrative Poem

Just Around the Corner Narrative Poem

Just Around the Corner

The card game through, the smoky house clears out, and voices grow as folks come close I know what it about. Friendly, but insistent they come to wake me up and take me home. Cranky, I squall, then moan as mommy moves me from covers, very warm, and stands me up while dad stuffs feet into my shoes and ties brown laces into bows I see and watch with awe little curlicues that act as butterflies!

As this is done to ready me, there more my arms are thrust up high for jacket fall that coats my arms and lands upon my head quickly pulled free then lands on shoulders, small, that jerks me wide awake for that which comes at night I know from recent past experience (so limited) is due to visiting relatives around the corner at night.

I love to go to play and stay awhile and listen to the gab, but soon it seems the lights grow dim and suddenly, when placed upon the couch, blink out . . .

Now auntie leans, kisses my sleepy cheeks, and uncle musses my curly hair so that my eyes see blurs while words ring clear; words that mean goodbye but say "goodnight".

It now I see and watch uncle big hands, now fists, curl the brass doorknob, and twist. The blast of wind blows through the door with force I waited for, and tuck my head against my dad who pats me some, some more.

I hear the click of shoe hard soles tripping gently down the granite stairs; I hope they dry I slipped before, so grip my dad warm hand to help me down below.

Glittering street, that place with bright white lights that line the way now dim with fog that scatters beads of salty drops to sparkle as they fall and land as cold wet mist on cheeks of me already red I told by dad who murmurs low, polite, to mommy ear, then back to me.

Says dad with cheer, "D like to go to uncle house?"

"Uh huh," I say and tug my dad to speed up home please please, I shake. It cold!

It there, just up the block see now the white cottage! I run. Five steps, four steps, three steps, just two, now none, I jump and jump for mommy and dad to catch up to let me in where bed awaits, all made for me and Barnaby cat to curl and sleep night.

I in, I jump, I tumble, I gather soft covers that smell of mommy soap; then dad chuckles, tells mommy down hall, "he right!" Then kissed I learn later, when dad reminisces vocally with an older gone, and so goes out the light.

Seattle Table Top Games

Seattle Table Top Games

A draft is a type of tournament for the Magic: the Gathering card game. You don't need to own any cards in order to play (although you'll own some by the end of the night), but it does require a fair amount of strategy and understanding of the game that can make it a bit more challenging for new players than a sealed tournament.

This will vary by venue, but drafts typically cost about $15, which is slightly more than the cost of the three packs you will recieve; this money typically covers the cost of the prizes given to the winners. Everyone starts by sitting in a big circle around a table (or, in the case of larger groups, several separate circles). Each person is given three packs of Magic: the Gathering cards and everyone opens their first pack at the same time. Then, everyone picks one card from that pack that they want to keep (often a rare and rarely a common, but in order to do well you'll have to think more about the value of the card in a deck than on ebay) before passing the pack to the person next to them. (Usually you pass left for the first pack, right for the second, and left again for the third, but it'd probably be best to find out what your venue does. Similarly, most venues have you remove the token and land from your pack before starting, but some do things differently).

This process continues and you keep picking one card from each pack handed to you until eventually all the packs run out of cards. (You should see each pack at least twice, probably more, which is something to remember when picking which card to take). Once the first pack is finished, everyone opens the second and third and repeat the process.

Now you take your 45 cards (hopefully you had a deck idea in mind by the end of the first pack, and most of those cards work well together, or are at least in the same color range) and build a deck out of them. Lands are usually provided by the host. You won't be using all of your cards, as the minimum deck size is 40 cards, and you will almost certainly want a land or two (probably between 15 and 20 in a 40 card deck), which means that it's fine to make a few "mistakes" during the drafting, like picking up a legendary rare white angel when everything else you're drafting is for a blue/black zombie deck. You should draft about 20 30 cards you won't use, though that doesn't mean you should just grab whatever. It's a fine line.

Now that you have your deck, every other card you drafted becomes your sideboard. Depending on where you're playing and who you're playing with, the format may vary. but expect to play full gauntlets with the winner of the tournament determined by best win/loss ratio. At the end of the night the cards are yours to keep, and if you did really well, you might just walk away with some prizes.

The Game of Rummikub

The Game of Rummikub

Squidoo: The Game of Rummikub A Family Favorite!

Rummikub is a more strategic version of the popular card game of Rummy, and is played with tiles, rather than cards.

This isn to imply that the card game of Rummy doesn also involve strategy! But Rummikub makes use of all the strategy you might employ in the regular Rummy card game, and then adds more. This is because not only can you play down your tiles on the sets of others, you can rearrange all the tiles already on the board to suit your liking.

It takes a lot of planning, figuring out, and problem solving in order to do this!

The Basics: The game is similar to the card game Rummy in that you play down runs (3, 3, 3) and straights (4, 5, 6), but the rules of this game allow something that regular rummy doesn Players are allowed to rearrange the whole board of already played tiles (adding one or more from their own rack in the process), as long as they can still keep at least three pieces in each set or dissolve the set entirely by moving all of its tiles into other sets. The fun comes in as you try to figure out in your head how you can rearrange the tiles on the board in such a way as to allow you to add one or more from your rack.

Let say, for example, that there is already a 2 3 4 5 6 on the board, all in the same suit. You may have a 4 in that suit on your rack. Just pull the 2 and 3 away from the rest and add your 4 at the end. The sets on the board would still all have at least 3 tiles in them (one set would have 2 3 4 in it, and the other would have 4 5 6), so that a fair play.

You can combine one or more sets on the board, as long as you follow all the rules. You can pull one or more tiles away from one or more sets, as long as every remaining set still has at least 3 tiles. You can completely demolish a set by using all the tiles in other locations. There are times when I rearrange almost every set on the board, in a single turn! To me, those turns are the most fun! It like working a puzzle, trying to figure out how to play one more tile from your rack so you can win the game!

I love this game!!! We call it Rack Rummy at our house. I played it since I was a teenager, took it away to college with me when I went, and have since taught it to my own husband and children.

What I love about the game: What I love about the game of Rummikub is the process of figuring out how I can play down all my pieces and go out. I make plans in my head of how I can accomplish this, often by rearranging the the whole board (all the tiles that have already been laid down) in new ways. The style of thinking I engage in to do this is so much FUN! To me, it like a puzzle to be solved!
